Tucked away just off Airport Road in Mt Hope, within the Southern Pines Golf and Country Club and overlooking the golf course is The Pines Spa, where the focus of today’s review is getting a set of gel nail extensions. A very common procedure women get done at spas, but this was all new to me as I’ve never seen it done nor have I ever been to a spa before. Well, except if you call touring the spas on cruise ships.
We decided on a 2 pm appointment with Trish the owner / operator of Pines Spa and finding the entrance to the golf course was a bit tricky, since the sign is very small and easy to miss as you drive by the location. With ample parking, as you enter the main doors to the club house you turn left on entry to get to the spa. When we first contacted Trish we had a bit of a problem scheduling an appoint that would work for both parties. Trish later explained that she’s normally booked solid and you may need at least a week’s notice to get an appointment of your choice. I saw this first hand, as there was a client leaving as we arrived and one waiting for the 2.30 spot that was immediately after us.
There was the usual scent of the chemicals used in doing nails (nail polish etc) as well as a soothing sort of “spa” candle smell that you would burn in your home to get that sort of serene feeling. Brightly lit with tons of natural light from the huge windows that looked on the greens of the golf course., but a little warm as we were going though a heat wave. Trish started immediately working on the gel extensions for Caron. Here is where I got a glimpse into why women love this “spa” thing, which I always though was cliche when people would say they’re going to the spa for a day or they need a day at the spa. I saw two women being women… chatting about work, travel, family and life in general while even if this was just a “nails” appointment and would last for about 30 minutes. They were in their zone!
Trish is highly skilled, with formal training in the treatments she offers to clients and has over 18 years of experience in the field. Her business started in Caledonia, then moved to the current location at Southern Pines Golf and Country Club where she’s never done any form of advertising and can now boast a solid client base built of her extraordinary reputation. When you can build a business on word of mouth, you know people appreciate the service you offer.

Our appointment lasted for 30 minutes and from the pictures in the album above you can see the transformation on Caron’s hands/fingers. Trish explained that she guarantees her work for 3 weeks and it’s recommended that you get the gels refilled in a couple weeks as your nail grows. TIP: If you’re planning on getting you nails done (or any spa treatment) you should check to see if the spa or service you’re using is formally trained, if the location is inspected and ensure it’s a legally registered business as it was revealed that the industry is not regulated so it’s buyer beware. If you’ve ever used a service that treated you like an assembly line, that should raise some concerns for you even though they may be cheap.
The Pines Spa is a full service spa with a wide selections of treatments offered to clients, including Botox, Juvederm and Restylane. They also cater to groups such as bridal parties, birthday parties and groups that just want to rejuvenate the body and renew their spirit. And there’s a discount group rate for bridal parties, which you can ask about when you call to book your next appointment.
